Your permanent resident status in Canada is officially proven by a permanent resident card. New PRs receive a card automatically from the Department; existing PRs can apply for one if they don't have it, including those who got their status under the old Immigration Act.

(1)53 (1) Pour l’application du paragraphe 31(1) de la Loi, l’attestation de statut de résident permanent est une carte de résident permanent :
(2)(2) La carte de résident permanent demeure en tout temps la propriété de Sa Majesté du chef du Canada et doit être renvoyée au ministère à la demande de celui-ci.
