A permanent resident loses their PR status through a formal determination by an adjudicator, for example, after failing to comply with the residency obligation or after a removal order is made. The loss of status is not automatic; it requires a legal finding.

Legal Text: IRPA Section 47
47 A foreign national loses temporary resident status (a)at the end of the period for which they are authorized to remain in Canada; (b)on a determination by an officer or the Immigration Division that they have failed to comply with any other requirement of this Act; or (c)on cancellation of their temporary resident permit, other than cancellation by an order made under subsection 87.302(1).
