Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't let these errors delay your application

📅

Using an Outdated Form Version

The #1 reason applications are returned without processing. IRCC checks the date code embedded in PDF forms. Always download forms fresh from canada.ca each time you apply, never reuse a form downloaded months ago.

📊

Not Clicking "Validate" on 2D Barcode Forms

IRCC PDF forms with barcodes (IMM 5257, IMM 5669, IMM 0008, etc.) must have the Validate button clicked before submitting. The barcode embeds all answers electronically. Submitting without validating means IRCC cannot read it.

📝

Missing or Incomplete Schedule A (IMM 5669)

Applicants frequently omit travel history, education periods, or employment gaps. Every single period since age 18 must be accounted for, gaps are not optional.

Wrong Form for the Situation

Using IMM 5709 (student extension) instead of IMM 5710 (worker extension), CIT 0002 for a minor, or a TRP (IMM 5708) when criminal rehabilitation (IMM 1444) is needed.

✍️

Unsigned Forms / Missing Sponsor Signature

For family sponsorship (IMM 1344), both the sponsor and the sponsored person must sign in the correct sections. Missing signatures mean automatic return.

🔄

Using IMM 1249 Instead of IMM 5708

IMM 1249 no longer exists. Applicants who find old instructions online still try to submit it. Use IMM 5708 for all Temporary Resident Permit applications.

💻

Submitting Paper for Online-Only Applications

Express Entry, most PR applications through the IRCC portal, and citizenship applications are now online. Paper versions of online-only forms are not accepted.

👤

Not Including IMM 5476 When Using a Representative

If anyone other than the applicant themselves is communicating with IRCC (lawyer, consultant, even a friend helping online), IMM 5476 must be included or IRCC will only communicate with the applicant directly.
