Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need to be in Canada for citizenship?

You need at least 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada within the 5 years (1,825 days) immediately before your citizenship application date.

Does time as a temporary resident count toward citizenship?

Yes. Each day you were physically present in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident counts as half a day (0.5), up to a maximum credit of 365 days.

How is the 5-year window calculated?

The 5-year window is calculated backward from the date you sign your citizenship application. It covers exactly 1,825 days before that date.

What if I don't have enough days yet?

If you don't meet the 1,095-day requirement, you'll need to wait and accumulate more physical presence in Canada. This calculator estimates when you'll qualify if you remain in Canada.
