A medical condition can close the door in three situations: it is likely to be a danger to public health, likely to be a danger to public safety, or it could reasonably be expected to put excessive demand on health or social services. The excessive demand branch is switched off for sponsored spouses, partners and children, for refugees and protected persons, and for their family members.

Legal Text: IRPA Section 38
(1)A foreign national is inadmissible on health grounds if their health condition (a)is likely to be a danger to public health; (b)is likely to be a danger to public safety; or (c)might reasonably be expected to cause excessive demand on health or social services.
